Fantastic!!! It made our 4th July weekend extra special., July 4, 2011

I purchased this snow cone maker as a last minute 4th July long weekend treat. Since we didn’t plan much for the weekend and didn’t want to spend a lot on a last minute idea so I purchased this manually-operate machine instead of the motorized one. As it turns out, it was the BEST little purchase I have ever made. It comes with three nice size ice bowls. Each ice block is big enough to make two good size treats. Don’t remember the last time that I had a fresh snow cone for a treat. It really made our long weekend a little extra special.

The reason that I had to write a review was to confirm how great and easy this product is to use. I saw the one-star reviewer and I thought that was because you have to do one extra step that is not on the user manual, in order to make this machine works. That is to expose the “teeth” under the hand crank in order for it to grip the ice like the ice-climber shoes; otherwise, this product “will not work”. The teeth are looking like upside-down, yogi nail-bed surface. It has a plastic protective cover for safety. I noticed this feature right away but forgot to remove the protective cover the first time that I used this machine, so I had slight trouble using it much like the one-star reviewer. But after I removed the protective cover and exposed the teeth then it’s heavenly after that. It should take a few minutes at most to shave each ice block to make your snow cones. Happy Summer Everyone!!!

Just got this yesterday. Took their advice and used the supplied molds and not just plain ice cubes (will try that later). Made one helping of frozen milk and two of plain ice. This morning, I put the block of milk in the hopper and cranked out some BEAUTIFUL shaved (not crushed, not flaked, but beautifully shaved) ice milk. Topped it with some chocolate syrup and just enjoyed the heck out of it. I’m not sure why the other reviewer found it so hard to crank the unit. I’m 61 with mild arthritis in both hands and didn’t have any problem. I don’t know how much hard use this beauty will take but I figure for $18 I can afford to buy a new one every summer.

Perfect shaved ice. Easy. Lightweight & Portable., August 21, 2011

A cheap, portable non-electric model I bought for under $14. It’s perfect for taking to the park with friends and sharing ice on hot days. I also reach for it, constantly, at home. Of course it can make perfect snowcones (the ice is snow-perfect) – but I use it for iced lemonade slushees, coconut milk/mung bean sweet treats; iced coffee drinks etc.

The plastic sides are light weight because they’re attached to a firm base/top. The hole design on the sides help grasp the unit during shaving AND transport. The manufacturer generously provides THREE lidded ice molds. The lids allow for stacking. They’re not airtight but help prevent spills & keep freezer odors out. TIP: Freeze a bunch of ice molds and store them.

Be sure to remove the plastic ‘guard’ from the blades on top. And don’t put the plastic mold of ice into the container, remove the ice from the mold. (Who would EVER make that silly error?). Eh, hem. Moving on.

I can see why cubes would be harder to shave than the flat surfaced, circular disk of ice that is created when you use the machine’s ice mold.

I have had problems with the upper blade penetrating the upper portion of the ice mold, but per other reviews, it appears to be my unit only. This may have something to do with *someone* having accidently put the whole plastic mold into the container. Eh hem. So, while a tad inconvenient, it’s easily fixed. The shaving works well at first, but then suddenly stops. Whenever it stops, I just reach in and flip the ice over at which point it works again. I repeat process until it’s all shaved & gone. It’s a bit more inconvenient but I take the blame for this negative…plus it was easily fixed, and didn’t require an engineering degree or appliance repair expertise.
